Dia De Los Muertos Glow Sugar Skulls

This Día de los Muertos Sugar Skull Painting is a colorful mixed-media Glow Paint project inspired by the Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Students begin with a sugar skull design and use paint, paper, gems, glitter, sequins, yarn, and other decorative materials to create a detailed and imaginative artwork. Bright colors, repeating patterns, flowers, and decorative shapes are used to make each skull unique.

Día de los Muertos is a time when families remember and honor loved ones who have died. Sugar skulls, or calaveras, are a well-known symbol of the celebration and are often decorated with colorful designs. This art project introduces students to these artistic traditions while giving them an opportunity to explore color, pattern, texture, mixed media, and design.

The finished paintings are festive, vibrant, and full of personality. This project works especially well as a Halloween-season art activity while also encouraging students to learn about and respectfully appreciate the cultural meaning behind Día de los Muertos.
