Amate Bark Painting & Mexican Folk Art

In this Art History Class, students will learn about the origins of amate paper and how artists have used it as a surface for storytelling and folk art for generations. We’ll look at the distinctive visual language of Mexican folk art, including simplified shapes, bright color combinations, repeating patterns, and imaginative compositions.

Students will then create their own Amate-inspired artwork, using animals, flowers, birds, plants, and decorative motifs to build a colorful composition influenced by traditional Mexican folk painting.
